Discount Cab would not be an industry leader in green innovation if it were not for the drive and passion of founder Craig Hughes. On Earth Day 2008, Hughes launched the Prius Project, converting the fleet to fuel-efficient cabs with the introduction of 20 distinctively-colored, lime green Prius vehicles. Today the company has the largest hybrid fleet of cabs in North America. Annually, each cab saves an estimated 4,000 gallons of fuel and the fleet as a whole prevents over 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide from impacting the environment.

In 2010, Total Transit took a bold step for the company, community and the industry when it installed a 400-panel rooftop solar energy system at the Glendale, AZ headquarters. This facility upgrade saves tens of thousands of dollars in electricity and is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 377 tons per year.

Due to these combined efforts, Discount Cab’s parent company, Total Transit, was selected as one of the “Green Pioneers for 2010″ by the Phoenix Business Journal. In 2011, Discount Cab was recognized with the “Blue Sky Award” at Phoenix Valley Metro’s Annual “Champions for Clean Air” Campaign Awards for going above and beyond to improve both air quality and traffic congestion in the Phoenix Valley.

Although the “Prius Project” has transitioned from being Craig Hughes’ project to a company-wide best practice, Discount Cab continues to emphasize the importance of Earth Day with its annual Earth Day campaign. On this day, a dollar of every ride is donated to local charities in each of the communities Discount Cab serves.
