Discount Cab was founded in 1984 by Craig and Christine Hughes, who started out with only two taxis. Craig, who remains the principal owner and is directly involved in day-to-day operations, had a goal to provide Phoenix residents with high-quality taxi service at a low price. Discount Cab was an immediate success, and grew by consolidation over the next few years, which led to our dominance in the Phoenix cab business. Over the past 25 years, we’ve grown to have over 550 vehicles and 1,000 drivers working from bases in east and west Maricopa County as well as Tucson.
The last decade has been especially busy for us! Some notable milestones include:
- 2003 – Expanded into Southern Arizona with the opening of the Tucson Operations
- 2005 – Renovated our Glendale offices and maintenance facility to be more eco-friendly and energy-efficient
- 2008 – Earth Day roll-out of twenty Prius taxis as part of the “Green Cabs for Blue Skies Campaign,” and was awarded Valley Forward’s Environmental Excellence Award of Merit
- 2009 – Celebrated our 25th anniversary, launched the text-a-cab option, added the automatic Interactive Voice Recognition service, and were named the “Taxicab Large Fleet Operator of the Year” by the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA)
- 2010 – Activated 400 solar panels on our Glendale facility, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 377 tons during the first year.
